Wordless Wednesday—Gardenia Pass-along

My former neighbor Jean rooted this gardenia for me the first year I moved to the neighborhood. I noticed yesterday the shrub is full of buds and a quick check this morning revealed the first two blooms.

They are pretty wonderful. Some of my gardenias look like sticks after the rough winter, but this particular one is strong and happy.

My dad gave gardenias to my mom when he proposed, so they have always been special in our family. I’ve never grown them, but I buy some to float in a bowl every once in a while.

How absolutely heavenly! Our Gardenias didn’t make it through the cold winter…and anyway, they were never too happy in the hot sunny spot where I had put them! These are so gorgeous; can’t imagine the scent.

I’ve tried to take cuttings several times so I can share it too, but am so unreliable at nurturing little plants that aren’t in the garden borders, none have made it.

I could smell their fragrance just looking at the photos. I wish I could grow them in the garden here, but they will have to winter over inside in pots and they do not do well.
